Shankar (Shah Rukh Khan) is a young man who works for a powerful coal-mine owner, Raja (Amrish Puri). Shankar unquestioningly obeys the orders of Raja and his evil brother Brijwa (Salim Ghouse). Raja casts his wicked gaze on a simple village belle Gauri (Madhuri Dixit) and concocts a devious plan to win her affections. He sends a photograph of Shankar to her parents along with a marriage proposal, planning to substitute himself as the bridegroom on the wedding day.

Things get out of hand when Gauri falls passionately in love with the picture of Shankar and though she is compelled to marry Raja, she elopes with Shankar. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, this revenge drama is packed with action sequences, as Raja and his henchmen use helicopters, hi-tech vehicles and gunmen to get Gauri back from Shankar. Music scored by Rajesh Roshan includes ‘Ghungte Mein Chanda’ and ‘Tanhaiyee Tanhayee’.
